Preparation for Sunday April 15, 2012

Good Afternoon Everyone,

How is your week going? Things have been good here. Now that Easter is over things have calmed down so I am getting a breather myself.

Just a heads up that next week I will be out of the office from Monday through Wednesday because of the pastor’s conference out at Twin Rocks. Brad (the ‘temp’) will be in the office his normal hours if you need anything.

Also, there is no Soup and Bread tonight or for the next couple weeks. Our next Soup and Bread Meeting is on Wednesday May 2nd when we are hosting an Ice-Cream Social and kicking off two new small groups:

  • A Crash Course in All Things Quaker (Wess, facilitator)
  • The Spirituality of Children (Debbie Hagen, facilitator)

Quaker Quotes and Queries

Some thoughts from the Quaker Tradition:

True godliness don’t turn [people] out of the world, but enables them to live better in it, and excites their endeavours to mend it: not hide their candle under a bushel, but set it upon a table in a candlestick… William Penn

Our forefathers [and foremothers] did not talk about the implications of a way of life which they were not already striving to follow; neither dare we let our words outrun our striving, nor our plans our readiness to implement them. The world desperately needs men and women whose yea is yea and whose nay is nay. The testimony of our daily life still matters. We prayer that this may be our sure witness: that of us it may be said that our lives make it easier for [people] to believe in God. London Yearly Meeting, 1943

Queries:

  • In what ways am I being led to open my hands to those around me?
  • Is my faith turning me out into the world so that I might live better in it?
  • Does the way I live put on display the gift of God in the world?

This Week and Easter Sunday Preparations

Good Afternoon Everyone,

I hope your week is going well so far. I wanted to write to give you a heads up about the community events this week and also send out our preparatory text for Sunday.

Wednesday 6pm Soup And Bread - Marie Morasch will be leading us through the “Stations of the Cross.” I hope you can come and join in with us as we participate in this longstanding practice for Holy Week.

Thursday 6pm Laundry Love – Adam, Henry and Jenn will be out at Riverside Laundry supporting Laundry Love this week. Feel free to drop by and say hello or send folks that way who may need help.

Sunday 6:30am Easter Sunrise Service at Beacon Rock (Picnic Area) Join us for a “A Liturgy for Resurrection” There will be singing, readings, prayers – all geared towards reflecting on Christ’ resurrection and where we have witnessed resurrection in our own lives in the last year. There will be coffee and pastries. More info on the church website.

Sunday 9:30am Easter Brunch – Everyone is invited to bring a brunchy side dish to share (our hospitality crew is bringing the egg casseroles). After breakfast we will head up stairs for our regular meeting for worship at 10:45pm.

Scripture Text for Preparation

“When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

[And all that had been commanded them they told briefly to those around Peter. And afterward Jesus himself sent out through them, from east to west, the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation.]” (Mark 16:1–8)

This Sunday we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. This is Mark’s accounts of Jesus’ resurrection.

Since Caryl was just here doing a Godly Play training I thought we could use the Godly Play wondering questions for our reflection this week:

Queries:

  • I wonder what part of this story you like best?
  • I wonder what is the most important part?
  • I wonder what part of the story is about you or has you in it?
  • I wonder if there is any part of this story we can leave out and still
  • have all the story we need?

I look forward to seeing you all this week.

In the Light,
Wess

Crash Course in All Things Quaker – May 2nd

Starting Wednesday May 2  we will begin a small group on Wednesday nights called: “A Crash Course in All Things Quaker.” If it sounds like a car-wreck waiting to happen, just wait and see. We’ll be covering the high points of Quaker history, and we’ll also be discussing Quaker lingo, some of our Quaker “saints,” and some of the basic of how our church functions (How does it function, any way?). We’ll have special guests come and help lead us too (special guests, this is a heads up that we’ll be asking you to help). We’ll be using Ben Pink Dandelion’s book “The Quakers: A Very Short Introduction.” Please sign up if you’d like for us to purchase the book in advance for you (Cost $11.95) http://bit.ly/HcKndp
