A Quaker Meeting in Camas, WA
It’s fun to wake up and see your church on the front page of the local paper for doing something positive in the community. Camas Friends has been hosting “Laundry Love” for a year and a half now and we’re having a lot of fun doing it. Not only have we made some good friends, but we’ve had a lot of fund too, hosting BBQ’s, a birthday party, having great conversations, playing with kids and doing tons of laundry!
A couple years ago we spent a lot of time listening (to God and our neighbors) and discerning what we could do in our neighborhood to help others and this is what we came up with. Laundry Love is an “open-source” project first started in Los Angeles by a friend of ours – Greg Russinger and Just4One. As a small(ish) community we were looking for some simple, concrete way that we could help others and get out ourselves outside our meeting house so we could get to know better those in our community who are struggling. Since we first began we have taken on a second Thursday (we now host them on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month), had plenty of help and met tons of great people at the laundromat. We are constantly inspired by those who continue to live and fight against the odds.
If you are interested in starting something like this in your neighborhood check out the “Just 4 One” link above or contact our office. Because this is strictly volunteer run and donation-based (from people in our Quaker meeting and people in the community) we can always use help funding this project. 100% of the donations go directly to washing and drying people’s clothes (our extra supplies – detergents, fabric softners, etc. are donated to us by the awesome folks at Washougal’s Children’s Home Society).
If you’d like to help contribute you can do so through our contribute page or send a check to the church office (1004 NE 4th Ave, Camas WA 98607). Or you can stop by for a chat one Thursday night and lend a hand.
