John 11:38-41a and 43-44: When God Says “Yes!”

38 Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days.” 40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone.

43 …he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
Queries:
In what areas of my life do I need to be set free?
What might I do to enhance (unbind or release) others?
How can I learn to be more aware and responsive in freeing and encouraging others?

The message this Sunday was brought to us by Irv Brendlinger.  Irv is Professor Emeritus of Church History and Theology at George Fox University, where he taught since 1993.  He previously taught at Western Evangelical Seminary and Warner Pacific College.  Prior to teaching, he served in pastoral ministry in Oklahoma City.  He holds the M.Div. from Asbury Theological Seminary, the M.Ed. in Counseling from the University of Oklahoma and the Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, where his study of historical theology focused on John Wesley and the problem of slavery.  He has authored three books, To Be Silent … Would Be Criminal, the Antislavery Influence and Writings of Anthony Benezet, Social Justice Through the Eyes of Wesley and The Call to Authenticity, A Handbook of Hope for the Church.  The Wesley book was written while he served as Visiting Fellow at the University of Edinburgh.  Irv and his wife, Shirley, live in Portland, Oregon and are the parents of two adult children, Carol Joy and David. He enjoys the beauty of the Northwest for cycling and skiing.
