Full Message Title: “Building Equitable Practices &  Community Through Bias and Cognitive Dissonance Awareness A.K.A. Working for an Equitable Society When we Don’t Feel Like it”

About our guest speaker: “My name is Chimere (sha-mare) Hackney. I come to conversations on cognitive dissonance with the lens of an educator, parent, queer, person of color, and follower of Jesus. I am passionate about bridging differences and connecting with people whose beliefs differ from my own. I graduated from an all-women’s university called Mills College back in 2007 with a degree in English/Creative Writing and moved to Washington to pursue graduate work in education in 2008 at The Evergreen State College. I briefly taught at an international school in Costa Rica, and have spent the majority of my education career with Franklin Pierce schools. Since becoming a teacher, I have worn many hats ranging from teacher, teacher mentor, ASB advisor, and guest lecturer. I am currently Dean of Students while I pursue my principal certification through Pacific Lutheran University. I have collaborated with KNKX education, The Evergreen College Undergraduate Teacher Pre. Program, reports on equity and with the Seattle University school counselor program.”

Philippians 2:3-8 (ESV): Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

Mark 9:24 (NKJV): Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”

What is one bias that leads you to “look to your own interests” and how is this keeping you from looking to the interests of others?

As a follower of Jesus and child of God, what unbelief do you need help with in order to fully exist in and promote the inclusion and membership of the body of Christ/God’s community otherwise known as unconditional love?
